The Adirondacks – the Alps of the Northeast.

In 1884, New York State created the Adirondack Forest Preserve by setting aside several hundred thousand non-contiguous acres of its land to be “forever kept as wild forest lands”. Later, in 1892, the State took its map and drew a blue line around the Adirondack Mountains and the Preserve lands, formally naming the territory the Adirondack Park. The Park became permanent in 1894 when the State passed a constitutional amendment protecting it.

Today, the Park covers approximately 6.1 million acres and is a mosaic of both public and private land. Rich in history and culture, stunning in its beauty, and replete with opportunities for adventure and recreation, the Park is an exciting place to live and visit.

46 mountains over 4000 feet tall provide endless opportunities to hike and ski. The Park contains 2600 lakes and ponds and 1800 miles of river, creating a paradise for water enthusiasts. The Park is also a habitat and sanctuary for many species of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, black bears, bald eagles and peregrines.

The most popular areas of the Park include: Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Lake Champlain, Lake George, The Northwestern Lakes, The High Peaks Region and Whiteface Mountain.
